6950X is not really good comparison here as their price is simple extereme
a bit over board so...
You can get nice 5930k that will do great job. I havent followed on 6xxx
series much honestly but there are great ones from taht series as well taht
will not kill your budget.
And any i7 with 40 PCI lanes is good to handle 4 GPUs without issues.
Redshift benefits more of faster cores then multiple cores... ofc still
talking about i7 range not i3 CPUs, and in that matter Xeon would actually
be worse for Redshift.
And honestly ton of things are more single core - higher speed beneficial
then multi core slower speeds as you already pointed out.
So unless he is on Arnold, Vray or similar CPU render engine.. a lot more
benefits are there from i7 compared to Xeons.
For example 2 fastest e5-2687W xeons would be terrible choice for Redshift
as it have lower clock speeds and ton of cores that wont be used at all and
for price of two of them you can get i7 and couple great GPUs.
but even with overboard 6950x tehre is still budget for couple good GPUs,
compared to xeon route :)
plus you can OC i7
plus it handles 4 GPUs with ease :)
CC seeems it went to Robert only, sorry
