I think it also depends if you're using other programes as well.
Do you use any adobe programs like afx alot (take a single proc high
clockspeed, because they scale shit with multiprocessor) or nuke, arnold.
etc.

Don't know how well houdini scales with multicore etc.

But as for price it isn't that much cheaper.
this is a little list i created some weeks ago for our new ws.
it's in euro's and prices will vary on region but still the price of a 10
core i7 is out of order.
And even the 8 core is close to 2x dual xeon.

I haven't use red shift but it supposed to scale really good with multiple
gpu's
For this the xeons have an advantage of having more pci lanes available, so
if you want to have a 3rd or fourth GTX card for rendering it help's ;)
