Assuming you've already got pre-shattered geo, (you could use Francois' technique, that looks cool), I'd put a point at the center of each group, then animate the point colours of these to tell the RBD system when to release the RBDs via an RBD state DOP, with a bit of random angular velocity.  This gives you great choreagraphability, (is that a word?).  You could then use the shatter tools to up the rez.

Thanks Francois ... this is a great start. Does anyone know of a DOPs method
... like to get some collision between the falling chunks?
