I believe the quaternion attribute just determines how the Euler 
3-vector rotation channels are treated when blended or interpolated, 
i.e. SLERP'd.

The Attribute CHOP should let you set that attribute after the fact.  It 
can be picky about the names of the rotation channels, IIRC.
