I saw a talk the other day given by Veronica Costa Orvalho about re-
using facial rigs for other characters. She presented a sketch at
Siggraph on the topic which was her PhD thesis. It was very
interesting work. She currently has a company that acts as a service
bureau that will take in one fully rigged character with blendshapes
and apply that to numerous other characters where only a mesh needs
to be provided for the new character. It did a really nice job of
retargeting everything for very disparate looking characters.
Currently this only works for Maya, but you can still use her service
for blendshapes creation by providing all the files in .obj format.
She mentioned that for one client she was able to rig and create
blendshapes for 3 new characters in one day. She's not interested in
selling software, but is willing to work with companies to set up a
system for them that they would maintain themselves. It seems like an
enormous time saver and artists can still add to the blendshapes
created to make it more unique if needed.
