I find it very useful too. The problem with primduv() is that the uv's that it 
refers to are parametric and usually bare no resemblance to projected texture 
uv's (and are also close to meaningless for polygonal surfaces).

There was an informal request for an attribute gradient SOP back at the time 
of that odforce thread, but maybe it's time for an official RFE :)
