If you need them perpendicular to the outline for some reason then maybe
try using an extrude sop to create a border - turn off all the face
generation except one - so you get an outline - then plug that into the
second input of a point sop and in the normals parameter put $TX2-$TX
$TY2-$TY $TZ2-$TZ
Follow that up with a facet - make normals unit length.

The only problem might be if the extrude sop removes any points when it
makes the border.

If it doesn't work there are other things you can try but they are more

Hey guys

i've got a trace sop which nicely traces my input image, however with
the points that it generates, the normals face uniformly out in Z and
not point 'out' of the shape if you get what i'm saying. how do it turn
the normals so that they point outwards?
