have you tried playing with hcpio?

Usage: hcpio [-iotv] [-I file] [-O file]
This application provides a limited subset of the cpio
command so that NT users can extract and collapse HIP files
The program is used by cpio_collapse and cpio_expand.

you could maybe run rsync on the results
