[Sidefx-houdini-list] volume sprites and deep shadows

Some of my students are experiencing render artefacts when rendering a
sprite particle system with a volumetric shader assigned to it using a
light set with deep shadows. The artefacts are geometric shadow lines
that appear through the sprites on random frames.
Do any of you have any ideas about how these artefacts can be removed
(without resorting to Filter Shadows)?
