What about CHOPS?  Blending geometry with CHOPS will be at least as fast as with VEX. 
You can easily control amount of blending on per point basis with channel number in case of Animated Mode (then $NPT = icn()) or relying on sample index number in case of static geometry (then $NPT = icl()).

I'd give CHOPS a chance! ;)
