[Sidefx-houdini-list] hardware innovations

Well, we've just got a couple of great new machines. Dual processor,
dual core opterons with 4G of RAM. Superfast and so far, the most
stable (and quiet!) machines I've had for some time. Running opensuse
10. And when rendering you get to see geekily satisfying things like this:

top - 19:11:45 up 9 days, 22:14, 17 users, load average: 0.72, 1.87, 1.75
Tasks: 258 total, 9 running, 249 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu0 : 98.4% us, 1.6% sy, 0.0% ni, 0.0% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si
Cpu1 : 96.8% us, 3.2% sy, 0.0% ni, 0.0% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si
Cpu2 : 99.2% us, 0.8% sy, 0.0% ni, 0.0% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si
Cpu3 : 96.8% us, 3.2% sy, 0.0% ni, 0.0% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si
Mem: 4036776k total, 3442132k used, 594644k free, 229168k buffers
Swap: 1124508k total, 679412k used, 445096k free, 1028868k cached

Looked into the quad machines, but you pay a real premium for those 8x
opterons. Dual proc/core was the most cost effective way to go for us.
I agree with Pete, don't spend too much on the video card. Running a
6600GT here and thats just fine.
